The best time to visit Český Krumlov

Český Krumlov is beautiful all year, but what you can see changes with the calendar: the castle interiors only open from April to October, and never on Mondays.

Most people choose a day trip date by the weather. For Český Krumlov, the castle calendar matters as much: it decides whether the interiors are open and what the castle-included tours actually include.

Here is how the year breaks down for a day trip from Prague.

The quick answer

Go between April and October, Tuesday to Sunday, if you want the castle interiors. May, June and September balance good weather with fewer crowds; July and August have the longest castle hours and the busiest streets. Winter is quiet and atmospheric, but the interior tours close and castle-included tours serve lunch instead.

What is the best month to visit Český Krumlov?

May, June and September: the castle interiors are open, days are long and the streets are calmer than in high summer.

Spring and early autumn also keep the Vltava views green or golden. Book a few days ahead, and choose a Tuesday to Sunday date if the interiors matter.

What is Český Krumlov like in summer?

Busy and lively, with the longest castle hours: Tour Route I runs to 5 PM in June, July and August.

The river fills with rafts and the streets with visitors. One June guest arrived on a weekend with a Renaissance fair in town. Eat early, and expect queues for the castle tours.

Is Český Krumlov worth visiting in winter?

Yes for the atmosphere and the quiet, but the castle interiors are closed from November to March.

The castle museum and tower open into November and December, Tuesday to Sunday. Cedok and the Martin Tour replace castle entry with a three-course Czech lunch in the winter season. Cobbles can be icy, so wear boots with grip.

Why do Mondays matter?

The guided castle interior tours run Tuesday to Sunday only, so a Monday visit means courtyards and town, but no interiors.

This applies to every tour, including those that list castle entry. If the interiors are your reason for going, avoid Mondays.

When are the crowds lightest?

Outside July and August, and later in the afternoon once the coach groups head back to Prague.

Day-trip groups fill the town through the middle of the day. Overnight visitors get the quiet evenings. On a day trip, a smaller group helps: the Holašovice tour takes ten at most.

What is the weather like?

Central European: warm summers, cold winters and changeable spring and autumn days.

Pack a layer and a rain jacket outside high summer, and shoes with grip all year, since wet cobbles are slippery. Every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before, so you can rebook if the forecast turns.

What time of day is best?

On a tour you do not choose, but you can use the time well: castle first, then the town and river in the afternoon light.
